Mick Jagger – Psychoanalytic Seer

December 2, 2018

In 1969, the Rolling Stones released the album, Let it Bleed. One of the tracks was titled You Don’t Always Get What You Want, a song which includes the lyrics:

You can’t always get what you want;
But if you try sometimes;
Well. you might find,
You get what you need.

Many people come to psychotherapy believing they know what they want. As far as they are concerned, everything is fine, except they need tools to deal with, say, their anger.

Couples claim they just need strategies to help them communicate.

However, the difficulties people face often have deep psychological roots that are impervious to cognitive strategies. Real change can require long term, in depth psychotherapy.

Take it away Mick. You wise old man.
