Joseph Breuer first attended Bertha Pappenheim for a nasty cough. In my experience, most therapies begin with a nasty cough. That is not to say that the issues that lead people to seek help are minor.

Patients present because they are in pain. However, as with the case of Bertha, the presenting issue tends to be a doorway into deeper explorations.

In this way, the narrative of The Wizard of Oz is far bigger than Dorothy’s distress at Mrs Gulch threatening her dog.

At the same time, Dorothy may never have embarked on her inner explorations if not for her fears for Toto.
